Consultation
Each client must have completed a consultation before tattoo removal is undertaken. This is free of charge.
There are certain conditions that are contraindicated for laser treatment as they could cause skin damage. The main ones include:
- Significant sun exposure in the last six weeks
- Use of sun beds, spray tanning products or tinted moisturisers
- Pregnancy or trying to conceive
- Use of photo sensitising drugs such as Vitamin A or Roaccutane
- Cancer treatment
- Skin prone to keloid scarring
These conditions will be discussed at your consultation, but feel free to also contact us for further information.
The Process
During application of a tattoo ink is deposited into the dermal layer of the skin. The skin’s natural reaction is to try to eradicate this foreign material but the ink particles are too big.
Over time any tattoo will naturally fade as can be observed in the elderly or even just an old tattoo.
The laser selectively targets the ink and shatters it into minute particles enabling the body’s lymphatic immune system to eliminate the ink. The tissues surrounding the tattoo are not affected.
This elimination process takes between 6 – 8 weeks and it is imperative to allow this down time to achieve maximum fade before the next treatment is carried out.
Most tattoos will need around 6 – 8 treatments due to the depth of the layers of ink.
Once the fading has started we can show you how to use make up to hide the tattoo until you once again have clear skin.
Treatment Day Preparation
If you have a cold or flu like symptoms it’s best to reschedule your appointment until you are well. The lymphatic system that will eliminate the ink particles exists primarily to fight infections from invasions of bacteria or viruses. When your lymphatics are actively in this state, it is best not to overload it with ink removal.
One hour before your appointment you may take Panadol 500mg x 2. Panadol can also be used post-procedure for comfort if required.
Please do not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen, as they contain blood thinning properties that can cause bleeding.
What to Expect
The sensation of tattoo removal is likened to being flicked with a thin rubber band. The whole procedure is very fast and there is nothing to be anxious about. The procedure is tolerated well by most people.
